Can I expect to achieve 56k over existing phone lines?

Not all 56k modems are created equal, yet all of them try to get you the best connection possible. Naturally, some modems will do a better job than others. This means that while Total Net NH has the ability to connect you at the highest possible 56k access, connection speed still has to be negotiated by your modem, which will probably dictate a slower speed.

The condition of your line to the telephone company will determine the actual performance level achieved. Some lines will support >50Kbps all the time, while other lines are not capable of supporting it at all.

A pure connection speed of 56k is unachievable due to a FCC imposed regulation which limits speeds traveling over a phone line to 53k. Depending on your location, average connection speeds of 42k to 48k should be expected.

What are the different types/kinds of 56k?

There are three different types of 56k modems available: K56flex, X2, and v.90. Whatever kind of 56k modem you have will follow one of these "standards".

Officially, v.90 has been declared the industry standard for 56k connections. Most modem manufacturers offer free upgrades from previous standards (either K56flex or X2) to v.90.

It is generally recommended that if your internet provider supports v.90 connections, you should consider upgrading your modem to the v.90 standard.

I have a 56k modem, why am I still connecting at 33.6?

This could be a number of things:

  • Throw in Some Commas: Strangely enough, some modems can get confused when trying to dial into 56k lines. To remedy this, put in two commas after the phone number being dialed.

  • I Dial 9: If you dial "9" or another number to access the outside world when making calls, there is a good chance that your line is not capable of giving you 56k access.
How do I get faster speeds on my 56k modem?

  • Get the latest software: Your modem has software drivers (called "firmware") which are necessary to its operation. Because manufacturers are constantly revising and upgrading these software drivers to improve the speed of their modems, having the latest versions is often what makes the difference between good and bad connections. These upgrades are free and easy to install.
To find the latest software drivers for your modem go to: Modem Upgrades.

  • Clean stuff! Make sure all the connections are clean. Using rubbing alcohol and a Q-Tip works well to clean out the phone jack.

  • Disconnect Extensions: Try disconnecting any other devices from the line. Fax machines, answering machines, caller-id boxes, and other phones (even if they are in a different room) all add load to the line and decrease the speeds you can expect.
* Total Net CANNOT HELP you upgrade your modem. If you have questions that are not explained in the software documentation of your modem, you will have to contact your modem's manufacturer.
