Setting up Outlook Express or Outlook 2000? |
| A |
These pages are designed as a quick reference if you are experiencing problems with obtaining your e-mail from Total Net NH using Microsoft Outlook Express or Outlook 2000. This document may provide a solution to your problems if you are:
Our first step is to open Outlook Express or Outlook 2000. If you're prompted to connect to the Internet, click on Cancel. You do not need to be connected to the Internet to configure your Outlook settings. From the drop-down menu marked "Tools" select "Accounts."
The account management section will be opened. If you are configuring a new mail account, skip to the next section .
Section 1. Setting options of an existing account. If you already have an account for E-mail setup, and you are experiencing difficulties with mail, click on the Tab marked "Mail" and click on the button marked "Properties."
Please note that the username "jsmith" and the name "John Smith" are used for example purposes throughout this document.
The "Mail Account" name is how Outlook groups your E-mail account's settings. This name can be anything you choose since any person you send and receive mail to will not see this name. The "Name" field is the name that will be displayed when people receive mail from you. The "Organization" field need only be filled out if you are using Outlook Express for commercial purposes. Your E-Mail address is your User name [eg: jsmith] followed by Total Net NH's domain name [totalnetnh.net]. Separated by an '@' symbol: jsmith@totalnetnh.net Leave the Reply Address blank. Leave the Check Box checked for "Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive." If you disable this option, Outlook will not check your E-mail when you click on Send and Receive. Next click on the tab marked "Servers."
In order to Send and Receive E-mail, Outlook express needs to know the name of Total Net NH's mail servers. For mail being sent out using SMTP, the mail server name is "mail.totalnetnh.net." The same name is used for the Incoming POP3 server. Please ensure that these details are entered using lower case letters. The Account Name field under the Incoming Mail Server settings is your Total Net NH username [eg: jsmith]. Your Total Net NH Password should be entered into the Password field. Total Net NH's outgoing mail server does not require any authentication details from you, so the option "My server requires authentication" should be left unchecked. Next click on the Connection Tab.
If you are using a modem to access your E-mail, then the radio button next to "Connect using my phone line" should be checked. In order to access your E-mail using the phone line, a Dial-Up Networking connection needs to be selected. Click on the drop down list to select your Total Net NH Dial Up Networking Connection. The Security Tab need not be looked at since it is beyond the scope of this document, so skip directly to the tab marked "Advanced."
The Server Port Numbers should be left as their default values, which are:
The Total Net NH Mail server does not require a secure (SSL) connection, so leave both of these Check Boxes unchecked. At times, the mail server can tend to be busy, making the amount of time it takes to contact the mail server longer. It's best to set the "Server Timeouts" slider to around three (3) minutes. If your mail is duplicating over and over, check that "Leave a copy of messages on server" is disabled. Next time you check your mail, the messages will be deleted from the server. If the mail server will not send your messages if you have large file attachments, enable the option "Break apart messages larger than X Kb" and set the size of broken apart message to a size you are comfortable with (Must be under 1024Kb). By clicking on Apply or OK Outlook will save any changes to your mail account that you may have altered. Try sending and receiving your e-mail again. If the problem you were experiencing still persists, please contact us. Section 2. Configuring a new mail account. Open Outlook, then select Accounts from the pull-down menu marked "Tools."
The Account Management section will be opened. To create a new mail account, click on the tab marked "Mail," then click on the "Add" button and select "Mail...."
This action will open the new mail account wizard. 1. Enter your name the way you would like other Internet users to see when you send e-mail messages. Click on Next.
2. Enter your E-mail address. Your E-Mail address is your User name [eg: jsmith] followed by Total Net NH's domain name [totalnetnh.net]. Separated by an '@' symbol: jsmith@totalnetnh.net Click on Next.
3. Total Net NH's incoming mail server is a POP3 server. Select POP3 from the option list. The name of the Incoming and Outgoing mail servers at Total Net NH are: "mail.totalnetnh.net". Enter this in lower case letters, then click Next.
4. The Log on details are the same as when you dial-into Total Net NH. Your username should be entered in lower-case letters in the "POP Account" name field and your password entered in the "Password" field. Click Next.
5. Your mail account has been successfully configured. Click finish to begin sending and receiving e-mail using Outlook with your new settings. Click Finish. You will be returned to the Account Management section of Outlook.
Section 3. Testing your Outlook Settings. After having followed the steps from either of the previous sections to configure Outlook Express E-mail, close down the program by clicking on the File Menu and selecting Exit. Then open Outlook. When Outlook Express has opened, it will ask you to connect to the Internet by entering your username and password. Enter these details in lower case letters and click on OK. This will establish a Dial-Up Networking connection to Total Net NH. |
